Bale & Baler Types

It is important to pick the bale size and shape that is most effective for your operation. For average size haying operations there are two types of balers available:

Since square bales are small and easy to maneuver by hand, they are often the choice for farms with a few animals or operations that feed by hand. They are also easy to stack in areas with limited capacity. However, in some operations they are inconvenient because their smaller size requires more handling. Small square bales should be stored under cover and preferably inside a barn or shed to preserve quality in most climates.

Large round bales put more hay in each package, which makes them more efficient for handling. They come in sizes from 4'x4' to 5'x6'. Talk to your hay equipment dealer about which type and size of baler is right for your operation. Because of their design, large round bales do well stored outside, however it is necessary to take measures to protect their quality and mass while outside. See the Storing section of the site to get some great storage tips and tricks.
